A fan of OutKast was moved to replicate and distribute one of the group’s greatest songs, only to discover that Killer Mike had done the same, along with a special someone.
Dallas DJ Menace posted a video on his social media accounts on Tuesday (May 16) in which he can be seen remaking the beat for OutKast’s song “ATLiens.” Fans were immediately excited and filled with nostalgia after seeing the footage.
The DJ, however, was more interested in a message from Killer Mike, who had gotten in touch with Menace and expressed his enthusiasm for the rework. He added that he had also told Big Boi of OutKast about it.
“How enjoyable is my life? I created a video earlier today using the original sample to recreate the “Atliens” rhythm. Hours later, while watching the tape in the studio with the fucking BIG BOI, Killer Mike texts me. Ha! Made the day,” he tweeted.
The duo’s legendary album of the same name, which was released in August 1996, featured “ATLiens” as its second single. In the first couple weeks after release, it sold approximately 350,000 copies and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
With their debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, OutKast—made up of André “3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton—exploded onto the music industry in the early 1990s, not only making them financially successful but also bringing Southern Hip Hop into the mainstream.
The group is considered to be among the best in Hip Hop history by many people, including Joe Budden. When asked to choose between Mobb Deep and OutKast during his appearance on Drink Champs in March, the rapper declared OutKast to be the best rap group of all time.
Although I’m from New York, OutKast is the best group of all time, stated Budden. “I mean, I’m from New York, but OutKast is superior to Mob Deep. I won’t be seen on camera denying it. But Prodigy, may Mobb Deep rest in peace.
It’s not just Budden who has G.O.A.T.-level affection for OutKast. Rappers in Atlanta were outraged in 2021 when MyMixtapez shared a meme of the “G.O.A.T.S. of Atlanta” on Twitter that appeared to leave out OutKast, Gucci Mane, and Young Thug in favor of Jeezy, Future, Rich Homie Quan, and Lil Baby.
