After Repeatiting The Same Line 500 Times, Xzibit Jokes Off Dr. Dre's 'abusive' Perfection

Dr. Dre once forced Xzibit rerecord a single sentence around 500 times while he was working on his Man vs. Machine album, according to Xzibit.

Earlier this week, the former Pimp My Ride host drove over to Big Boy’s Neighborhood and reflected on his time working with the illustrious producer and how meticulous he is in the recording studio.

This was clearly visible, according to X, when the West Coast team worked on the song “Multiply” that would later be released in 2002 and include the late Nate Dogg.

He remarked of his entrance bars, “That took me about two or three hours to get that line. “Because he wanted me to sound like a preacher from the Deep South… I have been acting this way and I can’t stop. No. I didn’t resist even though I didn’t understand why or where he was trying to lead me. He calmly sat there and said, “Nope, try it again.”

“At some point, it was like, ‘Oh.’ The first opening lines sound that way because I had to let go of my preconceived notions of how I should sound and follow his direction.

He laughed as he continued, “He didn’t get there by sitting around. I believed I had everything down pat till I let go of the headphones. No. I have a lot of respect for him and trust him. It’s awesome to be in that situation where he considers your art to be excellent enough to exist in his realm.

After perhaps 400 to 500 tries, Xzibit finally nailed the take, and they continued to record the song. Even more playfully, Big Boy asked X if the music still made him happy or if it transported him to a “abusive” realm.

I was prepared to continue when he remarked, “Play that back. Hold on, I believe we have a solution. Maybe four or 500 times, in my opinion. I adore the tune. That bit I will never forget. Even if I develop Alzheimer’s disease, I will still be able to recall, “I been this way and I can’t stop.

In 2002, “Multiply” appeared on Xzibit’s Man vs. Machine album and was given a Busta Rhymes remix. On the Hot Rap Songs Chart published by Billboard, the Dre-produced song peaked at No. 23.

Dre and Mr. X to the Z have a long history of working together because the rapper, 48, had many cameos on Dre’s 2001 record, including the Eminem-assisted song “What’s The Difference.”

As he gets ready for a next album, which he swears will include some of the best work of his career but may possibly be his last solo LP, Xzibit said that he and Dre are still working together today.

Dr. Dre is participating as we go through everything and adjust the records for my upcoming album, Kingmaker, he claimed. He says, “You start in fifth gear,” and it’s weird how he has this thing with my voice. You turn on like a chainsaw when you do.

I’m feeling extremely good about the project and the tracks are turning out incredibly awesome. When you can record because you want to and not because you have to, it’s a different situation. This record, which I believe is my final as Xzibit the solo artist, will be released.
