French Montana has chosen to release a new song to honor his roots in honor of Morocco’s World Cup 2022 run to the semifinals.
The squad’s Cinderella narrative came to an end on Wednesday (December 14) as Morocco lost 2-0 to France for a spot in the championship game against Argentina and Lionel Messi, but the rapper is still proud of his team.
Montana, who was born and raised in Casablanca, the capital of Morocco, honored Morocco’s World Cup triumphs on the field by singing an anthem bearing the nation’s name. He performs the whole song impromptu in Arabic while paying homage to Morocco.
He raps, “Let’s go, Habibi,” over the upbeat dance song.
Highlights from the team’s World Cup performance, which includes an unlikely victory over Portugal in the quarterfinals on Saturday, are shown in the music video for “Morocco” (December 10).
French Montana met with hundreds of Moroccans in the midst of New York City’s Time Square for an amazing party to commemorate the historic victory over the weekend.
“LEGENDARY ON ANOTHER LEVELLLLLL HAMDULILLAH [flame emoji],” he captioned the post. “FIRST AFRICAN TEAM TO EVER MAKE THE SEMI-FINALS!! [Moroccan flag emoji] Ronaldo u had your time g … it’s Morocco time lol”
French joined the crowds chanting in Times Square and waving the red flag of his nation. The “Unforgettable” rapper kept the party going throughout the night, even calling on Bobby Shmurda to join the festivities by gifting him a Morocco soccer jersey.
The Coke Boys boss made sure to give a shout-out to Morocco even after the loss as it’s the furthest any Morocco soccer team had ever advanced in the World Cup as their sights change to 2026 where North America will play host.
“My head still gassed how far we came lol,” he wrote after the 2-0 defeat to France. “No Moroccan in the world should be sad today We shook the world up and we made history.” Never been done before, am so proud of the whole Morrocan team And so proud of the whole country Dima Maghreb.”
