Mattel has released a special edition Black Barbie to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the first Black Barbie, originally designed by Kitty Black Perkins in 1980. The new doll honors Perkins’ contribution to the Barbie brand and her impact on representation in toys.
The 2025 Black Barbie reflects the heritage of the original with dark brown skin and voluminous curly hair. Inspired by Perkins’ initial design, the doll wears a bright red, off-shoulder dress, accessorized with a gold cuff bracelet, red heels, and a glossy red lip. This tribute continues the legacy of celebrating beauty and pride in Black features.
Perkins, who studied fashion design at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, became Barbie’s principal designer in 1978. Her work on Black Barbie aimed to create a doll that Black children could see themselves in. Throughout her 28-year career at Mattel, she championed diversity, also contributing to the “Shani and Friends” doll line in the 1990s.
The introduction of Black Barbie influenced future Signature dolls representing notable Black women, including Aaliyah and Misty Copeland. Released during Black History Month, the 45th-anniversary edition is now available at MattelCreations.com and select Target locations.
