Dancehall legend Vybz Kartel, known as the “World Boss,” sat down with Jazzy’s World TV for an exclusive interview, reflecting on his journey from Portmore to global stardom. The conversation touched on his early influences, lessons learned from prison, his return to music, and even personal quirks like his snoring struggles and hidden talents.
Growing up in Portmore, Jamaica, Kartel describes his neighborhood as a tough but defining environment. “We grew up rough, so it made me strong mentally and otherwise, ready to take on the world,” he explained. Despite the hardships, he believes success is achievable for those who stay determined and believe in themselves.
Kartel credits Ninja Man and Buju Banton as two of his biggest musical inspirations. Hearing Ninja Man on the radio as a teen solidified his desire to pursue music. His uncles, who were DJs, also introduced him to the art form, though they never reached the same level of fame.
One of his earliest recordings, Love Fat Women, was inspired by Jamaica’s appreciation for curvy women. He laughed as Jazzy brought it up, embracing it as part of his roots. His career took a major turn when he opened for Bounty Killer in Brooklyn, a pivotal moment that propelled him into dancehall’s elite.
After serving 14 years in prison, Kartel reflected on what he missed the most—time with family. “Time is precious, and once it’s gone, you never get it back,” he admitted. The hardest part was missing out on his children’s lives and special moments with his mother. Now that he’s free, he finds joy in simple things—listening to birds sing, spending time with loved ones, and embracing every moment.
Kartel’s return to the stage in Kingston, Jamaica, was nothing short of legendary. Performing in front of 30,000 fans, he proved his cultural dominance hasn’t wavered. His ability to remain a powerhouse in dancehall despite his years behind bars speaks volumes about his influence and legacy.
On a lighter note, Kartel revealed that his partner hates his snoring so much she buys earplugs. He laughed about her comparing his snores to a truck engine, admitting that snoring runs in his family.
When it comes to dream travel destinations, Kartel listed China and Dubai as must-visit places. He’s fascinated by China’s modern, futuristic cities and sees it as a chance to expand his clothing brand, Vibes Cel. As for Dubai, he’s drawn to its luxury and breathtaking architecture.
Many might not know that Kartel is a skilled cook, a skill he picked up growing up in Jamaica. “We had to learn how to cook, or we’d get whooped,” he joked. His specialty? Seafood. He loves making lobster, shrimp, and steamed fish with okra. While Jazzy admitted she’s not a fan of okra, he promised to whip up a special oxtail dish instead.
Ending on an inspirational note, Kartel encouraged young people to stop rushing life. “Most of us still haven’t figured it out, regardless of age,” he said. His advice? “Combine what you do best with what you love the most, and let God do the rest.”
