New Balance Tokyo Design Studio Gives The Minimus Sneaker A Minimalist Makeover.

New Balance’s Tokyo Design Studio has transformed the Minimus sneaker, stripping away its sporty climbing shoe aesthetic in favor of a sleek, minimalist design. While the Vibram sole unit remains, the upper now features a simple, hairy suede body with no-sew overlays and a toggle lace system.

The redesign aligns with a broader shift in sneaker trends, moving away from chunky silhouettes to flatter, barefoot-inspired styles. Following collaborations with Issey Miyake and Junya Watanabe in 2024, the Minimus continues to gain traction in the fashion world. New Balance Senior Global Project Manager Yenny Hseih recently teased the updated version on Instagram, though official details remain scarce.

The Minimus’ growing popularity is further fueled by redesigns from Action Bronson and Renell Medrano’s Ice Studios, reinforcing its place in the evolving sneaker landscape. The new model is expected to launch later this year, marking a fresh chapter for New Balance’s approach to performance and lifestyle footwear.
