Flint, Michigan’s own Rio Da Yung OG has just dropped his first track with an accompanying music video since being released from prison, celebrating his freedom. The video that accompanies it paints the picture of his first day out. From jumping onto a private jet to spending quality time with his kids, Rio is back, and he’s bringing the energy with him.
Released on December 13, just two days after his release from federal prison, “Rio Free” marks the rapper’s comeback. His legal journey has been a tumultuous one. Back in 2021, Rio pled guilty to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, leading to a five-year sentence. However, following three years behind bars, he has transitioned to “community confinement” as part of his release, which is set to extend until mid-2025 with additional supervised release afterward.
Despite his time behind bars, Rio hasn’t been silent. Projects like “Fiend Lives Matter” and “Rio Circa 2020″ were released during his incarceration, maintaining his presence in rap. Now, with a clear path ahead, he’s gearing up for his homecoming concert at Detroit’s Masonic Temple on January 11, where fans can expect an unforgettable celebration of his return.
Pitchfork recently spoke with him about his release, and it’s clear Rio is focused on making the most of his second chance. If the release of “Rio Free” is any indication, he’s just getting started.
