X has implemented a controversial update to its block feature, now allowing blocked users to view the public posts of those who have blocked them. If you’ve blocked someone, they’ll still be unable to engage with, follow, or message you, but they can see your public content and access your followers and following lists.
Previously, blocked users couldn’t view the content of those who blocked them, limiting both engagement and visibility. Musk, who voiced his intention to overhaul the feature last year, argued that blocking was easy to circumvent and favored a stronger mute option instead.
Critics warn the update could enable stalking and harassment, while X claims it enhances “transparency,” stating, “Users can be more aware of potential harmful or private information involving them.” Musk’s changes also raise questions about compliance with app store guidelines, which require social networks to offer a way to block abusive users.
This update is one of several recent shifts at X under Musk’s leadership, including the paid blue check system and restrictions on visibility of post likes.
