Apple Introduces California Driver’s Licenses And State IDs To Wallet As Digital IDs Expand Across States.

Apple Wallet is moving closer to replacing traditional wallets, as California driver’s licenses and state IDs can now be added to the app. This makes California the latest state to embrace digital IDs, joining others like Hawaii, Ohio, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland, which already support virtual IDs through Apple Wallet.

California had already been testing its own mobile driver’s license (mDL) system through an app available on both Apple and Android devices. Governor Gavin Newsom commented on the development, saying, “Californians now have the option to add their driver’s license or state ID to their iPhone or Apple Watch in Apple Wallet,” highlighting the state’s effort to modernize services.

Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia are also set to offer digital licenses and IDs through Apple Wallet soon.
