Pusha T Admits His Solo Albums Fall Short Of Clipse's Catalog: 'I've Taken That L'

Pusha T feels that in terms of capturing the magic of Clipse’s celebrated discography, his solo projects haven’t fully lived up to fan expectations.

Following his artistic split with his brother No Malice, the Virginia rapper sat down for a new interview with GQ and provided a forthright evaluation of his output as a solo artist.

Pusha acknowledged that he’s “taken an L” in attempting to replicate the thoughtfulness that his former rhyme partner brought to the table and that his attempts are “never enough” – especially to fans and critics.

Just to be completely honest, he stated, “I’ve heard the fans’ screams ever since I went solo about what they were missing from the Clipse on my solo albums. “And I’ve attempted to imitate, include, and occasionally cater, but it’s never enough. And that was something I had to accept.

He truly gives an awareness of oneself that makes one think, “Man, I can’t dial into it and do it the way the people and the fans want to hear it. I’ve taken that L, too.

“I’m just saying it’s a L because I’ve tried, because I’m aware of the problem, and because I know that I couldn’t honestly check that box off,” the speaker added. The Kool-Aid has already been consumed by the populace, right? They already understand how it is manufactured.

They are already aware of how much sugar is present. They are aware that it doesn’t taste the same when I cook it. Therefore, even though I was trying to cross that box off, I couldn’t always do so.

When asked if he and No Malice have been working on music again, Pusha T said: “I wouldn’t say regularly, but we definitely have been experimenting with some concepts.

“He’s obviously been around and been there to be a part of it. I’ve been working on a couple other projects at once, in between touring. Therefore, I believe he has been enjoying it as well. I won’t push it, but it’s always entertaining to see him enjoy himself once more.

It has been a problem when I finish my verse and he finishes after me, and I feel like, ‘Hey dude, this is not fair.'” he continued. There needs to be a sacrifice. I guess it’s been a while since I heard rap with that degree of intelligence and common sense. It’s therefore a breath of fresh air.

With FakeShoreDrive’s Andrew Barber tweeting that a project is “imminent” if one reads between the lines, Pusha T’s remarks have reignited rumors that a new Clipse album is in the works.
