The Houston rapper Fre$H is featured in the Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) rapper’s tune, “Gang’Nem,” which was created by Sounwave and uploaded on Instagram on Friday (November 18).
Ab-Soul captioned the video with “HERBERT. December 16th. #TDE,” informing fans of the release date of his fifth studio album.
Herbert, the rapper’s first full-length release since 2016’s Do What Thou Wilt, shares its name with his legal one (Herbert Anthony Stevens IV). It contained tracks featuring Schoolboy Q, SZA, Mac Miller, Rapsody, and other artists, and peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard list and No. 9 on the Top Hip-Hop Albums chart.
The new album is referred to as “a purposely intimate depiction of the guy behind Ab-Soul going back to his roots, as emphasized by the name of the record, leaving the conspiracy theories he’s known for behind while stressing his musicality” in a press statement from TDE.
According to the statement, “Stevens completed the album as a transformed man with a new sense of purpose after going through a series of horrible catastrophes.”
Ab-Soul describes the realities of Los Angeles street culture in “Gang’Nem,” his next hit after the recent singles “Do Better” and “Moonshooter.” The rapper’s roots in Carson, California are honored in the video, which was directed by Omar Jones and describes his hometown and upbringing.
SZA has revealed the title of her eagerly anticipated new album and a likely release date in other TDE news.
The singer said in a lengthy interview with Billboard that the follow-up to 2017’s Ctrl will be called S.O.S. and that it would probably be released in December. She admitted that she is “now anxious” about achieving her deadline, and the piece repeatedly quotes her as expressing uncertainty regarding her musical career.
“I feel like music, in this capacity, I don’t see longevity,” she said. “I like to create, I like to write, I like to sing, and I like to share. But I don’t know if chasing after superstardom or whatever I’m supposed to be doing right now is sustainable for me or for anybody. I’mma take a good swing at it, and I’mma give ’em my absolute best.”
She later added, “I only do what I want to do, and this makes me feel free, safe, and unrestricted.”
SZA will also perform on Saturday Night Live’s show on December 3; Keke Palmer will serve as host.
