Among the Hip Hop artists who contributed to their individual award collections at the 2022, American Music Awards were Future, Nicki Minaj, and Kendrick Lamar.
On Sunday night (November 20), the annual Grammy Awards ceremony took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, honoring some of the best musical accomplishments of the previous year as chosen by fans.
Due to his victories in two of the four rap categories, Kendrick Lamar was the night’s top winner in the hip-hop genre. In addition to winning Favorite Hip Hop Album for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, the Compton-born MC also won Favorite Male Hip Hop Artist, defeating Drake, Future, Lil Baby, and Lil Durk.
I Never Liked You by Future, DS4Ever by Gunna, 7220 by Lil Durk, and Hall of Fame 2.0 by Polo G were other contenders for the latter.
Cardi B, GloRilla, Latto, and Megan Thee Stallion were up against Nicki Minaj for the title of Favorite Female Hip Hop Artist, however, Future’s “Wait For U” collaboration with Drake and Tems won out in the Favorite Hip Hop Song category.
The double-platinum ballad dethroned other top songs like Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow’s “Industry Baby,” Kodak Black’s “Super Gremlin,” Latto’s “Big Energy,” and Jack Harlow’s “First Class.”
Beyoncé triumphed in the R&B categories for Favorite Female R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Album (Renaissance), while Chris Brown defeated The Weeknd, Brent Faiyaz, Lucky Daye, and Given to win Favorite Male R&B Artist. The worldwide hit “Essence” by WizKid and Tems won Best R&B Song.
Taylor Swift won six awards, including Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Pop Album (Red [Taylor’s Version]), and Favorite Music Video (“All Too Well: The Short Film”), making her the most honored performer of the year.
Wayne Brady presided over the 2022 AMAs, which featured performances from an all-star ensemble that included GloRilla, Lil Baby, J.I.D., Ari Lennox, Stevie Wonder, and others.
Cardi B appeared as a surprise performer with GloRilla for a heated performance of their “Tomorrow 2” duet, while Lil Baby took the stage to perform a medley of “In a Minute” and “California Breeze” off his most recent album It’s Only Me.
Atlanta rapper J.I.D performed “Enemy” with Imagine Dragons before fellow Dreamville representative Ari Lennox joined Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and others in a tribute to Lionel Richie, the recipient of this year’s Icon Award, by singing “We Are the World.”
Given that they are each nominated for many categories at the 2023 Grammy Awards in February, Kendrick Lamar and Future may add even more trophies to their collections.
In second place behind Beyoncé with eight nominations, K. Dot has been recognized for “The Heart Part 5,” “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” and the highly sought Album of the Year, Record of the Year awards.
Thanks to I Never Liked You and “Wait For U,” as well as his appearances on Gunna’s “Pushin’ P” and DJ Khaled’s “Beautiful,” Hendrix has received six nominations throughout the rap categories.
Nicki Minaj got no nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards, despite having a big record with “Super Freaky Girl” and making a scene before the candidates were revealed.
