R&B newcomer 4Batz sat down with Angela Yee, Gigi Maguire, and Jordy Jor on the Lip Service podcast, opening up about his background, relationships, and the journey behind his latest project Still Shining.
At just 21, 4Batz has quickly become one of the most talked-about voices in R&B. Raised in Dallas, he first picked up music in third grade and received his first microphone from his alternative school teacher, after passing a test. His time in alternative school stemmed from fighting and gang-related issues, reflecting a turbulent home environment. Only last year, 4Batz left Dallas for the first time, traveling to Atlanta.
His viral single “Day to Day” marked a breakthrough, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard charts. The track’s success brought collaborations with Drake, Kanye West, and Usher. He was first discovered online when a supporter named Malik shared his music with Boo. Early in his career, he often wore a mask onstage to cope with anxiety about audience reception. Since then, he’s gone on to win Best New R&B Artist.
4Batz is currently dating fellow singer Anycia (28). The two first met at BET, with their first date taking place at Waffle House. He credits her with helping him navigate a dark period and improving his communication skills. A past failed relationship also served as motivation to push harder in his music career.
His latest release, Still Shining, is framed as a love project built on themes of romance and renewal. The title reflects his path from a difficult period into joy. 4Batz says the project is part of his mission to revive “bedroom music” in R&B. He is planning a tour this October, supported by a live band.
Even as his career gained momentum, 4Batz wrestled with mental health challenges, describing moments where it felt like “the world was against him.” His girlfriend helped him recognize damaging habits, and he’s now considering therapy while stressing the importance of controlling one’s reactions.
Family remains central to 4Batz’s journey, his mother is currently ill, and supporting her is a priority. He also wants to be a resource for friends and family facing incarceration or hardship. Looking ahead, he plans to grow his audience consistently instead of chasing immediate mainstream dominance.
Raised primarily by women, including his mother and grandmother, 4Batz acknowledges their influence in shaping his romantic, “lover boy” persona.
