2pac’s Record-Breaking ‘Dear Mama’ Series Earns Emmy Nomination

Since his untimely death more than 25 years ago, 2Pac has been memorialized in a variety of ways, and his extraordinary life may soon be recognized with an Emmy Award.

The Emmys announced the nominees for their 2023 event on Wednesday (July 12), which is slated to take place in September.

Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur is one of the five works that have been nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. The FX series competes against The U.S. And The Holocaust, Secrets of the Elephants, 1619 Project, and 100 Foot Wave.

Allen Hughes directed the five-part documentary series, which debuted on Hulu in April. It earned favorable reviews from both the film and the hip-hop communities and went on to gross enormous sums after its release.

Afeni Shakur, a founder of the Black Panther Party, and 2Pac, widely regarded as the best rapper of all time, are the subjects of the moving mother-son relationship depicted in Dear Mama.

The documentary has the highest watched premiere episode of an unscripted series in FX’s 28-year history shortly after its airing.
