On January 9, 21 Savage announced the upcoming release of his third solo album, “American Dream,” set to drop on Friday through Slaughter Gang and Epic Records. The album is described as the soundtrack for 21 Savage’s debut film, “American Dream: The 21 Savage Story.” The film’s trailer, directed by Donald Glover, Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, and Fam Udeorji, features three generations of 21 Savage, portrayed by Caleb McLaughlin, Donald Glover, and the rapper himself, navigating a personal crisis.
The cast includes Victoria Pedretti, Young Mazino, Chad Lindberg, Gail Bean, and Druski. Olori and Stephen Glover wrote the trailer, produced by Udeorji and Tara Razavi, who are also credited as executive producers.
The trailer offers a sneak peek of a new track by 21 Savage, born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph in London and raised in Atlanta since the age of 7. The track incorporates a sample from Rose Royce’s 1978 hit “Wishing on a Star,” and addresses the rapper’s roots with lyrics questioning his connection to his hometown. “American Dream” follows his sophomore album, “I Am > I Was,” released six years ago, which secured his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. The album’s single, “A Lot,” featuring J. Cole, won the Grammy for Best Rap Song that year.
